The Headcheck (sometimes referred to as the "Check Rein") fits from the centre of the saddle and up the horse's top line. It then divides into two straps. Each strap goes through a special loop on the harness bridle, and runs down the horse's face, finally fastening to the overcheck bit or chin strap. The purpose of a headcheck is to set the horse's head carriage at the optimal height for racing to give his best performance, be easy to control and not impede his breathing. 

Sometimes referred to as a "4 Ring Overcheck", the Running Headcheck is used on horses that don't like to be checked too high, or horses that like to hold their heads a little bit lower later into the race. 

The Running Overcheck can be adjusted so that the horse can get his head down (but only to a certain point). The reins are fed through the rings on the back part of the check, and the driver is able to provide more or less upward pressure as required, by varying the amount of rein contact.

Delivery Charges

For orders under £50 within the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man shipping is charged at £4.50. Orders over £50 have FREE delivery within UK mainland. Driving whips and cones are also excluded from free delivery and cannot be shipped outside UK mainland.

Wherever possible orders will be despatched within 48 hours however we may need to order products for you which usually takes 7-10days but please allow up to 28days
You should ensure that someone will be at your chosen delivery address to sign for the parcel(s). If no-one is available to receive the parcel at the specified address, the courier will leave a card with details of the attempted delivery, and the date of the next delivery attempt or where you can collect.

If your order consisted of a number of substantial items, these may be shipped in multiple boxes. Attached to one of the boxes will be your delivery note. The delivery note will list all of the ordered items, where items are to follow, this will be marked on your delivery note. Where there is a significant delay for part of your order, or stock is unobtainable, we will contact you to let you know. If you think that there are missing items from your order, please check the packaging thoroughly, as small items can sometimes be hidden within the internal packing. We often put small items within the packaging of larger items or attach clips to larger items for their security. This model is made from synthetic strapping - 13mm (1/2")wide in the front part, and 25mm (1") wide in the back part. It features stainless steel fittings. The front is fixed. The uni coupler is a conversion piece to allow the fitting of a French Style Headcheck coupler at the back, which attaches to the saddle hook via a slot.

Zilco synthetic strapping. This headcheck is specificially designed for use with the Zilco Hutton Overcheck Bit. The combination of the bit and headcheck are said to be one of the most comfortable and versatile options, and are particularly good for horses who keep their mouths open when leaning into the check, or for young horses that carry their head too high and fuss with the bit. 

Straps feed through the top slots of the overcheck (over the nose) and through the bottom slots of the bit (under the chin - but in front of the mouthpiece). When a horse leans down into the check, the strap over the nose presses down and the bit is pulled up into the mouth. The chin strap keeps the mouth shut.

The Headcheck (sometimes referred to as the "Check Rein") fits from the centre of the saddle and up the horse's top line. It then divides into two straps. Each strap goes through a special loop on the harness bridle, and runs down the horse's face, finally fastening to the overcheck bit or chin strap. The purpose of a headcheck is to set the horse's head carriage at the optimal height for racing to give his best performance, be easy to control and not impede his breathing.

This is the front part ONLY of the Fixed Headcheck - it connects the Back Part of the headcheck to the bit. This model suits The Fixed Front Headcheck and French Headcheck

Some horses may require a higher head-set to start the race, but then perform better at a lower setting as the race gets underway and the horse achieves its stride. The use of an Automatic Headcheck is perfect in these instances, as it allows the driver to adjust the headcheck whilst in motion.

The stainless steel pulley is screwed into the saddle (in place of the McKinney Hook), and the headcheck front is attached to the dee on the end of the chain.

The straps are attached to the vehicle via clips. The grey strap is used to shorten the headcheck and achieve a higher head-set. The red strap is used to release the chain and lengthen the headcheck.

Replacement Straps are also available for separate purchase.

The Headcheck (sometimes referred to as the "Check Rein") fits from the centre of the saddle and up the horse's top line. It then divides into two straps. Each strap goes through a special loop on the harness bridle, and runs down the horse's face, finally fastening to the overcheck bit or chin strap. The purpose of a headcheck is to set the horse's head carriage at the optimal height for racing to give his best performance, be easy to control and not impede his breathing.

The Headcheck (sometimes referred to as the "Check Rein") fits from the centre of the saddle and up the horse's top line. It then divides into two straps. Each strap goes through a special loop on the harness bridle, and runs down the horse's face, finally fastening to the overcheck bit or chin strap. The purpose of a headcheck is to set the horse's head carriage at the optimal height for racing to give his best performance, be easy to control and not impede his breathing.

This is the back part ONLY of the fixed headcheck - goes from the saddle up to the bridle headpiece. The complete headcheck is available here
