What Length To Select?
There a couple of guidelines I use for selecting a whip. The first rule of thumb is that a whip should reach the furthest shoulder of the furthest horse. In other words, assuming you are driving from the right side of the carriage, as most of us do, the thong should reach the left shoulder of your horse. If you are driving a pair, the whip should reach the left shoulder of the left horse. Following this logic, in tandem or unicorn, it should reach the left shoulder of the leader, and with four, the left shoulder of the left leader.
In general the following measurements may be followed in selecting the length of whip. However, these are not hard and fast rules. The difference of a few inches usually will not change the nature of the whip or it's suitability for a given job. The important thing is to select a whip that you are able to use comfortably, and accurately. If trying to work out the length of driving whip you require you could try measuring from your hand, whilst in the carriage and horse/pony put to, to the shoulder. Then the length of whip you need should be roughly this length when the length of shaft plus the length of lash is combined. If you prefer a shorter lash you may require a longer shaft. You may also prefer a longer whip for dressage and schooling and a shorter one for marathon
It's a little like selecting Harry Potter's Wand!!
120cm 140cm = 10 12hh single ponies
140cm 160cm = 12 14hh single ponies or 10 12hh pairs
160cm 180cm = 14 16hh single cobs or 12 15 hh pairs
180cm 200cm = 16+hh single horses or 15+hh pairs
140cm Shaft with 140cm thong = Small ponies
160cm shaft with 160cm thong = Cobs
180cm shaft with 180cm thong = Horses
The goal would be to have a whip that ends a little less than half the distance between the hip strap and the saddle when the driver is seated in the usual position. This gives good access to any part of the horse providing the thong is an adequate length. If you prefer a shorter lash then you will need a whip with a longer shaft
The whip length selected for pair would normally be slightly longer than that selected for the same size single. Often a longer thong is also selected which may be as long as to reach the top of the handle of the shaft.
Team and Tandem:
These will have significantly longer thongs and need a great deal of practice and competance to operate effectively. Telescopic whips can be very helpful in these cases.
